How coverage is organised

Bristol anchors coverage, because it showed the highest search demand of every town we researched. Around it sit eleven primary towns, each with enough local demand for its own page. They are Bath, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Swindon, Salisbury, Taunton, Exeter, Plymouth, Truro, Bournemouth and Poole.

Beyond those primary towns, coverage spreads much further. It still runs the full length of the South West. That stretch begins at the Cotswolds and Wiltshire in the north east.

It runs down through Somerset and Devon. From there it reaches west to Cornwall, then east again to the Dorset coast.

That spread matters, because the South West is not one housing market. A Georgian terrace in Bath needs a different approach to a coastal cottage in Cornwall. A modern estate near Swindon is different again.

Housing stock varies by area. So do local planning designations, such as conservation areas.

Bristol

Bristol has its own installation page and its own commercial page. Its housing is far from uniform. In Clifton, for example, Berkeley Square and Berkeley Crescent date from around 1790. Much of the area was built as tall terraces of three or more floors.

Those tall terraces pose different questions from a suburban semi. Therefore, one city still means more than one kind of installation job.

Bath and North East Somerset

Bath anchors this area. In 1987, UNESCO made the whole city a World Heritage Site. In a World Heritage Site, permitted development does not allow an outdoor unit on a wall that fronts a highway. Listed buildings fall outside those rights altogether.

In contrast, coal from the Somerset coalfield shaped nearby Midsomer Norton and Radstock. The last pit in Midsomer Norton, at Norton Hill, closed in 1966.

Somerset

Taunton, the county town of Somerset, is the primary town here. The county also takes in coastal towns such as Weston-super-Mare, Burnham-on-Sea and Minehead. Inland, it covers Yeovil, Glastonbury and Frome, plus Wells. That cathedral city is often described as England’s smallest city.

Gloucestershire

Gloucester and Cheltenham share this county as joint primary towns. Both are listed among the towns of the Cotswolds. When weathered, Cotswold stone is often described as honey or golden in colour.

Stroud, Cirencester and Tetbury are Cotswold towns too. Tewkesbury, however, is known for its medieval and Tudor buildings. It stands where the River Severn meets the River Avon.

Wiltshire

Swindon and Salisbury both carry primary status here, although the two differ sharply. Swindon was one of the fastest growing towns in Europe after the war. Salisbury, meanwhile, is a cathedral city near the edge of Salisbury Plain. It sits where the rivers Avon, Nadder and Bourne meet.

Devon

Exeter and Plymouth are the two primary towns. Exeter, the county town, sits on the River Exe. Plymouth is the largest settlement in Devon, about 36 miles south-west of Exeter. In the north, Barnstaple lies on the River Taw, 34 miles north-west of Exeter.

Cornwall

Truro, the county’s only city, is the primary town for the whole of Cornwall. Coverage reaches the full length of the peninsula. St Ives, for example, was once one of the most important fishing ports on the north Cornish coast.

Near its harbour, the streets are narrow and uneven. As a result, siting an outdoor unit there can take more planning than on a newer street.

Dorset

Bournemouth and Poole sit together as joint primary towns. With Christchurch, they form the largest urban area in Britain with no part holding city status. Inland, Dorchester is the county town of Dorset. Shaftesbury, meanwhile, stands on a greensand hill about 215 metres above sea level.
