Penzance on Mount’s Bay
Penzance is a town, civil parish and port in Cornwall. It sits in the shelter of Mount’s Bay, facing south-east onto the English Channel. Land’s End lies about 9 miles to the west. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had a population of 14,960.
The parish takes in more than the town itself. It also includes the fishing port of Newlyn and the villages of Mousehole, Paul, Gulval and Heamoor. The borough absorbed those places in 1934. As a result, Heamoor now forms its own ward on Penzance Town Council.
Penzance was granted a market charter in 1404. Later, in 1614, it was formally incorporated as a borough. Its railway station is the terminus of the Cornish Main Line. It is both the southernmost and the westernmost station in England.
Georgian streets and a conservation core
The current conservation area covers most of the core of the town. It also takes in the historic harbours of Newlyn and Mousehole. Special planning rules apply inside it. Regency and Georgian terraces are common in parts of the town, such as Regents Square and Clarence Street.
Chapel Street, the former main street, holds several notable buildings. For example, the Egyptian House there was built in 1830. The Union Hotel on the same street contains a Georgian theatre that is no longer in use. However, most of the town centre is of mixed date, including several 20th-century buildings.

An older terrace inside the conservation area can also need extra care. Its walls may be thick stone. In addition, any visible change to the front of a listed or conservation-area building may need a check with Cornwall Council first. A newer house tends to be far simpler, with easier walls to drill and more room for pipework.
Whichever street you live on, the outdoor unit still needs a firm, level base. It also needs clear air on both sides.
