Torpoint across the water from Plymouth
Torpoint sits on the Rame Peninsula in south-east Cornwall. It faces the city of Plymouth across the Hamoaze, the tidal estuary of the River Tamar. The 2021 census counted 7,160 people in its built-up area. The name Torpoint means rocky headland.
Unlike many older Cornish towns, Torpoint was laid out on purpose. Reginald Pole Carew commissioned a grid-based design for the town in 1774. Growth then followed the Royal Navy, because Devonport Dockyard workers settled here. HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy’s main training base, also boosted the population.
Local government has two tiers, Torpoint Town Council and Cornwall Council. The town has four parish churches. These are Maryfield Church, Torpoint Cornerstone Church, the Catholic Church of Saint Joan of Arc and St James Church.
The Carew family still shapes the area. They became the Carew Poles in the 20th century, and they still live at their family seat, Antony House. The town also has a small secondary school, Torpoint Community College.

Saltash, further up the Tamar, is known as the Gateway to Cornwall. Brunel’s Royal Albert Bridge opened there in 1859, and the Tamar Bridge was completed in 1961.
