A town on Bristol’s eastern edge
Kingswood is a town and civil parish in the South Gloucestershire district of Gloucestershire. It lies within the Bristol Built-up Area, about 4 miles east-north-east of Bristol city centre in a straight line.
Broadly, the town runs from John Cabot Academy in the west to the A4174 ring road in the east. The boundary with the City of Bristol crosses the western end of Kingswood’s High Street. However, many locals treat nearby Two Mile Hill and St George East as part of Kingswood too.

Royal forest, coal and a local tradition
In Saxon times, the King’s Wood was a royal hunting estate that surrounded Bristol. The Constable of Bristol Castle also served as Chief Ranger of Kingswood Forest. The first one on record, Ella, died in 920.
The area first became an industrial centre in the late 17th century, because of coal mining. That history still affects the town today. For instance, old mine workings occasionally open up in gardens. The local MP has asked Parliament for full surveys of the mines beneath the town.
Kingswood became an urban district in 1894. From 1974 it gave its name to a district of Avon, and it joined South Gloucestershire in 1996. The civil parish was recreated on 1 April 2023.
Meanwhile, an annual Whit Walk procession has taken place on the Whit Bank Holiday since at least 1939. Owners of the town’s older buildings should check planning rules for an outdoor unit beforehand.

Staple Hill and Emersons Green sit close by on the same eastern side of Bristol. Keynsham lies to the south, and buses connect it with Kingswood. As a result, all three fall within the same coverage area as Kingswood.
