Trowbridge: Wiltshire’s county town

Trowbridge is the county town of Wiltshire. It stands on the River Biss in the west of the county, close to the border with Somerset. The 2021 census counted 43,750 people in its built-up area.

The town became the administrative centre in 1889, when Wiltshire County Council was set up. Today, County Hall is still the administrative centre for Wiltshire Council. A civic centre opened in 2011 beside the town’s central park.

Its wealth came from cloth. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it was the leading centre of woollen cloth production in south-west England. As a result, it earned the nickname “the Manchester of the West”. The last woollen mill, Salter’s Home Mill, closed in 1982.

That mill now holds Trowbridge Museum and a café, inside the Shires Shopping Centre. Nearby, the Handle House once dried and stored teazles used to raise the nap of cloth. It is one of the few such buildings known to survive in the UK. Clark’s Mill, next door, now provides office space.

St James’s Church and Parade House are among the town’s six Grade I listed buildings. The Town Hall, presented by mill owner Sir William Roger Brown in 1889, has an Italianate clock tower. Meanwhile, the Newtown conservation area protects a zone of mostly Victorian houses.

Between 1951 and 2011, the town’s population grew by 133%. Fields and some riverside meadows became housing estates. Consequently, Trowbridge mixes a historic core with much newer homes.
