Amesbury and the Avon valley
Amesbury is a town and civil parish in southern Wiltshire. It sits in the River Avon valley, on the southern fringes of Salisbury Plain. The town’s built-up area had 12,680 residents at the 2021 census. The prehistoric monument of Stonehenge lies within the parish.
The town is claimed to be the oldest occupied settlement in Great Britain. For example, archaeologists found in 2014 that people had lived here since around 8820 BC. Excavations at Boscombe Down in 2002 and 2003 also found the Amesbury Archer, a rich Bronze Age burial.
Amesbury has a town council, and Wiltshire Council is the unitary authority. Therefore Wiltshire Council handles planning here, as it does for Salisbury. Part of the Boscombe Down military airfield lies inside the parish too.
How the town grew
The old town grew up around water meadows beside several bends in the river. Over time, however, it spread onto the valley hillsides. Growth sped up after a military aircraft testing establishment opened at Boscombe Down in 1939.
Since the town lies within the A303 commuter belt, new housing estates have filled much of the land toward Boscombe Down. The most recent, Archers Gate, takes its name from the Amesbury Archer. Solstice Park, a business development, sits at the Boscombe Down junction of the A303.
The centre keeps some older buildings as well. For instance, the George Hotel dates from around 1560, with later changes. The Kings Arms is mid 18th century, while the Antrobus Arms dates from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
