Yeovil at a glance

Yeovil is a town and civil parish in Somerset, close to the county’s southern border with Dorset. At the 2021 census, its built-up area, which spreads into Brympton, West Coker and Yeovil Without, had 50,170 residents.

The town has a long history. A Saxon charter first names it in 880, and its name comes from an old name for the River Yeo. The Domesday Book records it as a thriving market. In the 1800s it became a glove-making centre, and the population grew quickly.

The local football club still carries the nickname “the Glovers”.

The aircraft and defence industries then grew through the twentieth century. As a result, German raids hit the town during the Second World War, and bombs destroyed 68 houses between 1940 and 1942. Today Leonardo still builds helicopters in Yeovil.

Two tiers of local government cover the town: Yeovil Town Council and Somerset Council. Since 2023, Somerset Council has handled planning across the whole county. The oldest landmarks sit near the centre. For instance, the Church of St John the Baptist dates from the 14th century. Yeovil Country Park, which includes Ninesprings, gives the town a large open green space as well.
