The place
Highbridge is a historic market town on the edge of the Somerset Levels, near the mouth of the River Brue. The 2021 census recorded 5,365 residents in its built-up area. The town shares Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council with its neighbour. Meanwhile, Somerset Council runs other local services.
A bridge has crossed the Brue here since the 14th century, and the town takes its name from it. The crossing has long been important on the route from Bristol to the South West. Later, Highbridge grew as a market and industrial town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its employers included a livestock and cheese market, the wharf and the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway works.
The railway works closed in 1930, and the wharf closed to shipping in 1949. However, the nearby M5 has since brought light industry and commuters to the town. Highbridge & Burnham station still serves the Bristol to Exeter line. Frank Foley, the spy known as the “British Schindler”, was born here and has a statue near the Community Hall.

The Levels here are low-lying, and water management has shaped the town for centuries. For instance, a new channel cut in 1801 for the Glastonbury Canal aimed partly to improve drainage along the Brue. Its clyce, the local word for a sluice, still survives. For that reason, an installer will plan the condensate drain with care.
They will also raise the outdoor unit clear of damp ground, rather than fixing it straight onto soft soil. Housing in Highbridge ranges widely in age. The former wharf area now holds recently built homes along the river. A housing estate also stands on much of the old railway land.

Highbridge sits inland of the coast at Burnham-on-Sea, so salt-air precautions matter less here. Still, a property close to the Brue near its mouth may benefit from them.
