North Petherton, between the Quantocks and the Levels
North Petherton is a town and civil parish in Somerset. It lies just south of Bridgwater, on the edge of the eastern foothills of the Quantocks. In the east, the parish reaches out into the Somerset Levels.
North Petherton’s built-up area had 3,180 people at the 2021 census. The parish also takes in the villages of North Newton and Huntworth. Since April 2023, Somerset Council has run the area, while North Petherton Town Council handles local matters.
An old settlement that became a town late
North Petherton dates from at least the 10th century and mattered in Saxon times. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded a settlement here called Nortperet, with 65 households. However, it only became a town in the late 20th century.
Until then, it claimed to be the largest village in England. The parish is still among the largest in Somerset, at about 43 square kilometres. It also remains the largest in the old Sedgemoor area.
The Alfred Jewel, thought to have been made for Alfred the Great, turned up at Petherton Park in 1693. A replica sits in the parish church of St Mary. That church has a richly decorated tower of 112 feet, claimed as one of the tallest in the West Country.
In 1906, North Petherton became the first town in Britain to light its streets with piped acetylene gas. Meanwhile, the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal crosses the parish. Its Crossways Swing Bridge, built in 1827 by John Rennie, is grade II listed.
A commuter town beside the M5
A turnpike between Bridgwater and Taunton opened through the town in the 1730s. Later, the M5 arrived in the 1970s and took heavy traffic off the A38. As a result, several new housing estates followed.
Today the town is largely a home base for people who work in Bridgwater and Taunton. Its centre is an area of archaeological potential, and a number of buildings are listed. South-east of the town lies North Moor, a large Site of Special Scientific Interest on the Levels. Anyone near the listed centre should check planning permission for air conditioning before choosing a spot for the outdoor unit.

The housing here runs from listed buildings in the old centre to newer estates. Therefore, the installer will check the wall type before pricing. A solid wall usually means pipework run along an outside face, while a cavity wall often lets it pass more directly.
Low, flat ground near the Levels can be soft underfoot. That mainly affects the base for the outdoor unit, not the rest of the fit. Still, it is worth mentioning if your home backs onto open land.
