Chard is a town in Somerset, with around 14,300 residents in its built-up area at the 2021 census. It lies on the A30, close to the borders with both Devon and Dorset. At 121 metres above sea level, it is the southernmost town in Somerset and one of the highest.

The town has a long history. It appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Cerdre, and King John granted its first charter. However, a fire destroyed most of the town in 1577, so much of the old centre dates from the rebuilding that followed.

Lace, canals and early flight

Chard became a centre for lace manufacture after 1820. Bowden’s Old Lace Factory and the Gifford Fox factory both date from that trade. Meanwhile, the Chard Canal reached the town in 1842, and two railway lines arrived in the 1860s.

The town also claims a place in aviation history. In 1848, John Stringfellow demonstrated engine-powered flight here with his work on the Aerial Steam Carriage. Today, the Numatic factory, maker of the Henry vacuum cleaner, employs over 700 people in the town.

Chard has an unusual feature, since it sits on a watershed. Two gutters within the town drain in opposite directions. One eventually reaches the Bristol Channel, while the other flows to the English Channel.
