Glastonbury is a town and civil parish in Somerset. It sits at a dry point on the low-lying Somerset Levels. Its built-up area had 8,300 residents at the 2021 census. The Glastonbury Festival, held in the nearby village of Pilton, takes its name from the town.

The Levels around the town are drained marshland. In winter, the surrounding moors often flood. From the top of the Tor, it is easy to see how Glastonbury was once an island.

People have lived here since Neolithic times. For example, the Sweet Track, a wooden causeway west of the town, is one of the oldest engineered roads known. Tree-ring dating places its building in 3807 or 3806 BC.

Glastonbury Abbey dates to at least the early 7th century. It dominated the town for the next 700 years and was one of the most important abbeys in England. The abbey met a violent end during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Its last abbot, Richard Whiting, was put to death in 1539.

Its remains still stand in 36 acres of parkland. The Abbot’s Kitchen is grade I listed, and the Lady Chapel is particularly well preserved. Several of the town’s oldest buildings, such as the Tribunal and the George Hotel and Pilgrims’ Inn, are linked to the abbey.

The town’s conservation area holds about 170 listed buildings or structures. Of these, eight are grade I and six are grade II*. The Church of St John the Baptist, for instance, dates from the 15th century.
