Shepton Mallet is a market town and civil parish in Somerset. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had 9,645 people. The Mendip Hills lie to the north, and the River Sheppey runs through the town. So does the line of the Fosse Way, the main Roman road across this part of England.

The medieval wool trade later gave way to brewing in the 18th century. For example, the Anglo-Bavarian Brewery, built in 1864, was the first in England to brew lager. The old town and its buildings

Shepton Mallet has 218 listed buildings. The town centre, together with Bowlish, Darshill and Charlton, forms a conservation area. The Grade I listed parish church of St Peter and St Paul dates from the 12th century. However, most of the current building comes from the 15th century.

A hexagonal market cross, about 50 feet high, stands in the Market Place and dates from 1520. The former prison nearby opened in 1610 and closed in 2013. At that point, it was England’s oldest prison still in use. Garston Street, to the east, keeps a row of 17th-century weavers’ and artisans’ cottages.

The wool and cloth trades once drew their power from the River Sheppey. In the early 18th century, around 50 mills stood in and around the town. As a result, several fine clothiers’ houses survive, particularly in Bowlish on the western edge.
