Minehead on the Bristol Channel
Minehead is a coastal town and civil parish in Somerset, on the south bank of the Bristol Channel. It lies close to Exmoor National Park, just outside its boundary. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had 11,750 residents. The parish also includes Alcombe and Woodcombe, which have been absorbed into the town.
A small port existed here by 1380 and later grew into a busy trading centre. However, most trade moved to larger ports during the 20th century. The town then revived through sea bathing, and tourism grew in Victorian and Edwardian times. Butlins opened a holiday camp here in 1962.
North Hill rises steeply from the harbour shoreline and overlooks the town. The older areas include Higher Town, Quay Town and Lower or Middle Town, although they are no longer separate. Higher Town has many listed cottages, and some still have thatched roofs. Meanwhile, early 20th-century building produced the wide main shopping avenue in Edwardian style.
Minehead is the starting point of the South West Coast Path, which runs to Poole in Dorset. It is also the terminus of the West Somerset Railway, the longest standard-gauge heritage railway in Britain. Local services come from Minehead Town Council and Somerset Council.
In 1990, a severe storm washed away much of the beach and flooded the town. As a result, the Environment Agency built a new sea wall and a raised beach, opened in 2001. The Bristol Channel also has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world.

Listed cottages in Higher Town need more care, because changes to a listed building’s outside can need consent. Thatched roofs also rule out some fixing positions.
