Bridgwater on the River Parrett
Bridgwater is a historic market town in Somerset. About 47,900 people lived in its built-up area at the 2021 census. It lies on the River Parrett at the edge of the Somerset Levels. The town centre grew up on the west bank, while the old part on the east bank is called Eastover.
It has a long history as a trading centre. The town appears in both the Domesday Book and the earlier Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. By 1500, it had become the largest port in Somerset. For example, its port shipped wheat, peas and beans to Ireland, France and Spain, and later cloth as well.
Admiral Robert Blake is believed to have been born here in 1598. The house on Blake Street is now the Blake Museum. Bridgwater also hosts the largest of the Somerset carnivals each November. Its parade follows a route of about 2.5 miles.
In the 19th century, meanwhile, the town became a major centre for clay tiles and bricks. At the peak, about 24 million bricks a year left Bridgwater from ten makers. The Somerset Brick and Tile Museum on East Quay now tells that story.
Since 1 April 2023, Somerset Council has been the unitary authority here. It replaced Sedgemoor District Council and the county’s other district councils.

The town holds a wide mix of building ages. For instance, Castle Street is a Georgian street built in the 1720s, and some of its houses are Grade I listed.
