Devizes: a market town at the edge of the Vale of Pewsey

Devizes is a market town and civil parish in Wiltshire. It stands at the west edge of the Vale of Pewsey and the north-western edge of Salisbury Plain. Chippenham lies to the north-west, and Trowbridge, the county town, lies to the south-west. Wiltshire Council runs most local services, while the town council has a more consultative role.

The town grew up around Devizes Castle, which Osmund, Bishop of Salisbury, built in 1080. Because the castle stood on the boundary of three manors, it became known as the “castle at the boundaries”. That Latin phrase gave the town its name. Devizes then received its first charter in 1141, which allowed regular markets.

Wool, corn and a Civil War siege

From the 16th century, Devizes became known for its textiles. By the mid-18th century, it held the largest corn market in the West Country. Traders once piled their sacks around the market cross. Later, the Corn Exchange opened in 1857 to house that trade.

The town also saw fighting in the English Civil War. In 1643, Parliament’s forces besieged the Royalists here. However, a relief force routed the besiegers at the Battle of Roundway Down.

Parliament ordered the castle’s destruction in 1648. As a result, almost all of the present castle dates from the 19th century.

Listed buildings and the Market Place

Devizes has around 500 listed buildings, a large number for a town of its size. For instance, 17 Market Place is a substantial grade I listed house from the early 18th century. Brownston House on New Park Street is also grade I. In the centre of the Market Place, the Market Cross dates from 1814, to a design by James Wyatt.

Wiltshire Council also protects parts of the town as a conservation area. Its street plan still follows the concentric lines of the old castle defences. In particular, the two 12th-century churches, St John’s and St Mary’s, are both grade I listed.

The Kennet and Avon Canal

The Kennet and Avon Canal runs through the town. John Rennie directed its construction between 1794 and 1810, linking Devizes with Bristol and London. Near the town, the canal rises 237 feet through 29 locks. Sixteen of them climb in a straight line at Caen Hill.

The canal fell out of use after the railways arrived, but it reopened for leisure use after restoration between 1970 and 2003. Today, National Cycle Route 4 follows its towpath through the town. Each Easter, the Devizes to Westminster canoe race starts here.

Devizes is about 19.4 miles by road from Swindon, around 35 minutes’ drive. In a straight line, the gap is about 16.8 miles. Devizes lost its railway line in 1966.
