Corsham’s Bath stone streets

Corsham is a historic market town and civil parish in west Wiltshire. It sits at the south-western edge of the Cotswolds, just off the A4. The 2021 census recorded 10,890 people in its built-up area.

The town prospered from Wiltshire’s wool trade in medieval times. After that trade declined, it kept its wealth through quarrying Bath stone. Stone is still mined underground here today, although on a smaller scale than before.

Wiltshire Council has been the unitary authority since April 2009. Before that, Corsham came under North Wiltshire District Council. Locally, Corsham Town Council has held town council status since 2000.

Old High Street, Court and tunnels

Corsham’s High Street holds more than 60 listed buildings. For example, the row known as the Flemish Weavers’ Houses is Grade II* listed. The Grove, opposite the High Street, is a classic piece of Georgian design.

Corsham Court stands in the town centre, based on an Elizabethan manor from 1582. It has belonged to the Methuen family since 1745, and it opens to the public for most of the year. Capability Brown and Humphry Repton both landscaped its parks. Its peacocks are famous locally, since they often wander into the streets.

Meanwhile, much of the town’s story lies underground. Old mine workings run to the south and west of Corsham. Several Ministry of Defence sites now use former quarries, while others hold wine or data storage.

The town also grew fast in the 20th century. Its population rose from 3,754 in 1931 to 9,268 in 1951, largely because of incoming military staff. Newer housing now surrounds the old core, taking in former hamlets such as Hudswell and Leafield.

Corsham is about 9.7 miles by road from Bath, around 20 minutes’ drive along the A4. In a straight line, Bath lies about 8 miles to the south-west. Chippenham is 4 miles to the north-east, also on the A4. The Great Western Main Line passes through too, although Corsham station closed in 1965.
