Bradford-on-Avon on the River Avon
Bradford-on-Avon is a west Wiltshire town near the border with Somerset. About 9,900 people lived in its built-up area at the 2021 census. The River Avon runs through the town, which grew up around a ford across it. In fact, that “broad ford” gave the town its name.
The Kennet and Avon Canal runs parallel to the railway through the town. It links to the Avon at Bath in the west and to the Thames at Reading in the east. Meanwhile, the Western Wiltshire Green Belt completely surrounds the town. It helps keep the town’s setting and its separation from Trowbridge nearby.
The Saxon church of St Laurence may have been founded by Saint Aldhelm around 705. High inside it, two carved flying angels sit above the chancel arch. Nearby stands a Grade I listed tithe barn from the 14th century. It is 180 feet long and now forms part of Barton Farm Country Park.
A Norman stone bridge still crosses the river in the centre. Its Norman side has pointed arches, while the newer side has curved arches. A small building on the bridge began as a chapel and later served as the town lock-up.
The town grew wealthy on wool, and Daniel Defoe noted how rich its clothiers were. Around thirty woollen mills later lined the riverbank. They ran on water and then steam, until the last one closed in 1905. The best weavers’ cottages survive on Newtown, Middle Rank and Tory terraces.
