Stroud and the Five Valleys
Stroud is a market town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, and the main town in Stroud District. About 26,100 people lived in its built-up area at the 2021 census. It sits below the western escarpment of the Cotswold Hills, where the Five Valleys meet. As a result, the town is known for its steep streets.
Stroud grew as a cloth town. Its woollen mills ran on the small rivers of the five valleys, supplied by Cotswold sheep on the hills above. In particular, the town became known for broadcloth, traded around the world as “Stroud cloth”. It also made military uniforms in a colour called Stroudwater Scarlet.
Several old mill sites still stand along the valley floors. For example, Stroud District Council has made separate conservation areas for groups such as Ebley Mills and Lodgemore and Fromehall Mills. Meanwhile, the Stroudwater Textile Trust has restored historic machinery in several mills, including a working waterwheel.
The Stroudwater Navigation opened in 1779 and closed in 1954. Today Stroud District Council and the Cotswold Canals Trust are restoring it as a leisure route. Stroud is also known for its farmers’ market, held every Saturday at the Cornhill. It won the national Farmers’ Market of the Year award in 2007 and again in 2013.
A smaller market runs on Fridays and Saturdays in The Shambles, beside the steep High Street. John Wesley preached there from a butcher’s block in 1742. Nearby, the Old Town Hall, first known as the market house, dates from 1596. It is one of the oldest buildings in Stroud.
