Winchcombe is a market town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, 7 miles north-east of Cheltenham. At the 2021 census, 4,340 people lived in its built-up area. The town lies in the Cotswolds, and many of its buildings date back to medieval times. The Cotswold Way and six other long-distance footpaths cross the town.
In Anglo-Saxon times, Winchcombe was a major community in the kingdom of Mercia. King Coenwulf favoured the town, and he was buried in Winchcombe Abbey. However, nothing now remains of the abbey. In the 11th century, Winchcombe was also briefly the county town of Winchcombeshire.
The town keeps much of its medieval layout. For example, its High Street mixes timber-framed and Cotswold limestone buildings, and some date back to the 15th century.
