Nailsworth, in the Stroud Valleys
Nailsworth is a town and civil parish in the Stroud District of Gloucestershire. It lies in one of the Stroud Valleys in the Cotswolds, on the A46 road. The 2021 census counted 5,660 people in its built-up area.
The town sits just south of Stroud, and the Nailsworth electoral ward stretches south to Horsley. Additionally, Stroud District Council handles planning for the town, while Nailsworth Town Council deals with more local matters. A mill town where two valleys meet
Nailsworth began as a settlement where the Avening Valley meets the Woodchester Valley. The Nailsworth Stream runs through it. In more recent centuries, it was a small mill town and a centre for brewing, since the stream could power the mills.
The railway came in 1867, as the end of the line from Stonehouse. However, the branch lost its direct link to the national network in 1947. Today an hourly bus links the town to Stroud and Gloucester instead.
Some of the town’s buildings reflect that history. For example, the Town Hall began life as a chapel for a dissenting congregation and opened in 1867. St George’s Church, on higher ground in the centre, dates from 1900.
The church itself shows how steep the ground can be. Its builders first planned a tower above the entrance. Still, the raised ground proved too unstable for the weight, so the church got an unusual porch instead.
A small centre with a busy calendar
The town centre has been revived over the past decade. Specifically, it now holds cafes, restaurants, bakers, a hardware store and several galleries. A farmers’ market runs on the fourth Saturday of each month. Volunteers also deliver the Nailsworth News to every house in the parish.
Walkers visit in the summer, and a town crier still announces the market and the Nailsworth Festival. Meanwhile, Forest Green Rovers play at The New Lawn in Forest Green. In 2017 Nailsworth became the smallest place ever to host a Football League club.
