Winterbourne is a large village and civil parish in South Gloucestershire, just beyond the north fringe of Bristol. It also takes in Winterbourne Down, Whiteshill, Hambrook, Frenchay and Watley’s End. Frampton Cotterell lies to the north-east, while Bradley Stoke lies to the west.
The Domesday Book recorded the place as Wintreborne, meaning “winter stream”. Much of medieval Winterbourne grew up around St Michael’s Church, which dates from the 12th century. Next to the church stands Winterbourne Court Farm Barn, a Grade II* listed tithe barn from the 14th century.
The modern village is largely built on a hill, with woods and fields around it. The River Frome runs through a valley between Winterbourne and Frampton Cotterell. Meanwhile, the Bradley Brook separates the village from Bradley Stoke and Stoke Gifford. Since the 1960s, the M4 has bypassed Winterbourne to the south-west.
The Huckford Viaduct carries the Great Western Railway over the River Frome near the village. Beneath it, the old Huckford Quarry is now a public nature reserve. Furthermore, St Michael’s Primary School dates back to 1813, when Hannah More and William Wilberforce founded it.
South Gloucestershire Council is the unitary authority for Winterbourne, so planning questions go there rather than to Bristol. The High Street has a library, a Post Office and several shops.
