Torquay on Tor Bay
Torquay lies on the north of Tor Bay in Devon, about 18 miles south of Exeter. Paignton adjoins it on the west of the bay, and the fishing port of Brixham lies across the water. At the 2021 census, the built-up area had 52,035 residents. Local services come from one council, the unitary authority of Torbay.
People lived here long before the resort. Kents Cavern, Britain’s most important Stone Age site, was home to early humans for some 40,000 years. Hand axes found there date back that far.
The first major building here was Torre Abbey, a monastery founded in 1196. Like Brixham, the town first lived on fishing and farming. However, in the early 19th century it grew into a fashionable seaside resort. Its mild climate earned it the nickname “the English Riviera”.
Growth was fast. The population rose from 838 in 1801 to 24,767 by 1887. Cabbage trees, or Torbay palms, came here from New Zealand in 1820. Later, between 1900 and 1928, places such as Babbacombe, St Marychurch, Cockington and Chelston joined the town.
Wealthy Victorians built up Wellswood and the Lincombes with large villas. Many have Italianate features and towers. After World War II, private high-rise blocks of flats went up above the Rock Walk cliffs. The writer Agatha Christie was born in the town, too.
