The place
Stoke is an inner suburb of Plymouth, in the ceremonial county of Devon. It is also known by its earlier name, Stoke Damerel. In 1844 Stoke Damerel was a parish in Roborough hundred, next to the borough of Plymouth. At that time the parish also took in Devonport.
The first naval dockyard, now HMNB Devonport, opened in the parish of Stoke Damerel in 1690. Consequently, the area grew alongside the dockyard for more than two centuries. In 1914 Devonport and Plymouth joined with Stonehouse, and the new town took the name of Plymouth.
Today Stoke is densely built up with family houses. The main railway line from Paddington to Penzance cuts through the middle of it. The area has been prosperous for several hundred years.
As a result, it keeps distinguished private houses from Georgian and Victorian times. Several of them appear in Nikolaus Pevsner’s guide to South Devon.
The parish church, Stoke Damerel Church, is also known as the Church of St Andrew with St Luke. It dates from the 15th century, and its tower is the oldest part. The church was enlarged in 1715 and 1751 to serve the growing parish and the dockyard. It has been Grade II* listed since 1954.

Much of Stoke’s housing dates from the Georgian and Victorian eras. Older houses of this age often have solid rather than cavity walls. Neither point rules out a simple job. However, both are worth flagging when you book a survey, so the installer can plan the pipe route in advance.
