Seaton on the Jurassic Coast
Seaton is a seaside town, fishing harbour and civil parish in East Devon, between Axmouth and Beer. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had 7,435 people. The town faces Lyme Bay and sits on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. A sea wall runs along a mostly shingle beach about a mile long.
Seaton was an important port for several centuries. However, a landslip in the 14th century partly blocked the Axe estuary, and a shingle bank built up. The railway arrived in 1868 and helped the town grow as a holiday resort. As a result, many of its buildings are Victorian, including a group of large houses at Seaton Hole.
The branch line closed in 1966. Part of the old trackbed now carries the Seaton Tramway, which opened in 1970. It runs about three miles through the Axe and Coly valleys to Colyford and Colyton. Today the nearest railway station is Axminster, around seven miles away.
The town today
Seaton also has notable buildings from the 1930s and later periods. For example, Seaton Town Hall opened in 1904 and now serves as a theatre. More recently, a regeneration plan has reshaped low floodplain land east of the retail area. Around a million tons of sand, brought in by sea, raised that site above flood level.
West of the Axe lies Seaton Wetlands, a group of nature reserves that includes Seaton Marshes and Colyford Common. Meanwhile, the Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs National Nature Reserve lies to the east. The town sits beside floodplains, with hills close on either side.
