Crediton in the Creedy valley
Crediton is a town and civil parish in the Mid Devon district of Devon. It stands on the A377 Exeter to Barnstaple road, where the A3072 to Tiverton branches off. About 8,000 people lived in its built-up area at the 2021 census.
The town lies in the narrow vale of the River Creedy, between two steep hills. As a result, it splits into two parts. The north is the old town, while the south and east form the new town.
A bishop’s seat and a wool town
Crediton claims to be the birthplace of Saint Boniface, born here in about 672. He later spread Christianity in the Frankish Empire. Today he is the patron saint of Germany and the Netherlands.
In 909, a see was set up here with Edwulf as the first bishop. However, in 1050 Leofric moved the seat to Exeter, a larger walled town. Since 1897, Crediton has given its name to a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Exeter.
Similarly, trade shaped the town for centuries. The wool trade was in place by 1249. Serge and other woollen cloth made the town rich, and trade peaked in the 16th century. The textile trade then declined after the middle of the 18th century.
Fire has also shaped the town. On 14 August 1743, a great fire destroyed High Street and much of the West Town. Around 450 houses burned, and more than 2,000 people lost their homes.
Crediton today
At the time, only the Great Fire of London had been larger in the country. Moreover, further large fires followed in 1766, 1769 and 1772. The parish church is a Perpendicular building with a central tower, and it was formerly a collegiate church.
Southeast of the town, on a ridge above the river, stands Downes, a country house built about 1692. It was the birthplace of General Sir Redvers Buller. Meanwhile, Crediton station, designed by Brunel, opened in 1851 and now serves the Tarka and Dartmoor lines.
