Plympton, an old stannary town within Plymouth
Plympton is now a suburb of Plymouth, in Devon. In origin, however, it is an ancient stannary town. It was an important trading centre for locally mined tin. It was also a seaport, until the River Plym silted up and trade moved down river to Plymouth.
The town has been part of the Plymouth local authority area since 1967. It is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. In the early 12th century, it became the site of Plympton Priory, and the priory’s gatehouse still survives.
Plympton is also the birthplace of the painter Sir Joshua Reynolds. He became the first president of the Royal Academy of Arts. In addition, he served as mayor of Plympton in 1773.
A medieval core and later growth
The old town is still dominated by its ruined Norman motte-and-bailey castle. It also keeps a cohesive medieval street pattern. Its historic buildings use green Devon slate, limestone and lime-washed walls, with Dartmoor granite detailing.
Plympton has 68 listed buildings in the Historic England database. Fore Street, the main street, is lined with medieval buildings. Around thirty of them are Grade II* or Grade II listed.
The town formed from several older villages, including St Maurice, Colebrook, Woodford and Chaddlewood. Between about 1990 and 2010, Plympton saw considerable growth. As a result, an old core and a large, more recent suburb now sit side by side.
