A cathedral city on three rivers

Salisbury is a cathedral city in the south-east of Wiltshire, and its built-up area had 47,690 residents at the 2021 census. It stands where the rivers Avon, Nadder and Bourne meet, near the edge of Salisbury Plain. The city is administered by Wiltshire Council, a unitary authority. Salisbury City Council serves as its parish council.

The first cathedral stood at Old Sarum, north of the present city. In 1220, however, the bishop moved it to a meadow near the meeting of the Nadder and the Avon. The new town was laid out on a grid. It received a city charter in 1227 as New Sarum.

The cathedral and the Close

Work on Salisbury Cathedral began in 1221, and the tower and spire were complete by 1330. At 404 feet, the spire is the tallest in England. The Cathedral Close is Britain’s largest. It holds many buildings of architectural or historic significance.

Salisbury has held a charter market since 1227, now on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Stonehenge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies 8 miles north-west of the city. Meanwhile, Salisbury railway station is an interchange between the West of England Line and the Wessex Main Line.

Rivers and low ground

Because the land is low-lying, the rivers are prone to flooding, especially in winter. The Town Path links Harnham with the rest of the city. At times, however, flooding makes it impassable. East Harnham Meadows, in the Avon floodplain, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

For that reason, the siting of the outdoor unit matters on low ground near the rivers. A firm, level base keeps the unit clear of standing water. The unit also needs clear air on both sides and a proper route for the condensate drain.
