Wimborne Minster, often just called Wimborne, is a market town in Dorset. It lies where the River Stour meets the River Allen, 5 miles north of Poole, on the Dorset Heaths. The built-up area had 16,630 people at the 2021 census. The town also forms part of the South East Dorset conurbation.
The name Wimborne comes from the Old English “winnburna”, meaning a stream by a pasture. The town shares its name with its minster church, a Saxon church with Norman and Gothic work. The minster is famed for its chained library. It also holds the tomb of King Æthelred, the elder brother of Alfred the Great.
