Shaftesbury is a town and civil parish in north-east Dorset, near the border with Wiltshire. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had 9,160 people. It is the only significant hilltop settlement in Dorset. The town centre stands about 215 metres above sea level on a greensand hill.

The old centre sits on a westward-pointing promontory at the edge of Cranborne Chase. Below it to the west lies the Blackmore Vale, part of the River Stour basin. Meanwhile, the built-up area runs down the slopes to lower ground at St James, Alcester and Enmore Green.

Alfred the Great founded Shaftesbury Abbey in 888, and it became the wealthiest Benedictine nunnery in England. However, it was destroyed at the dissolution in 1539. Shaftesbury also has two museums. Gold Hill Museum, founded in 1946, sits at the top of Gold Hill. In addition, Shaftesbury Abbey Museum tells the story of the abbey from its grounds. The town’s Arts Centre, set up in 1957, uses the old covered market.
