Verwood: a growing town on the Dorset heath
Verwood is a town and civil parish in eastern Dorset. The parish also takes in the village of Three Legged Cross. The town sits where the B3081 and B3072 roads cross. It also lies on the River Crane, which later becomes the Moors River.
Clay soils around the town once supported a pottery trade, known collectively as Verwood Pottery. The potters made mainly domestic earthenware, and hawkers sold it across southern England. Examples of the pots can still be seen at the Verwood Heathland Heritage Centre. Therefore the trade remains part of the town’s story today.
Most of the town’s growth is recent. By the 2021 census, its built-up area had 13,710 residents. It is also the largest town in Dorset without an upper school of its own.
A name and a landscape with a long past
The town’s name has changed over time. It was recorded as Beau Bois, Norman French for “beautiful wood”, in 1288. By 1329, it appeared as Fairwod, meaning “fair wood”. Later, the initial “f” shifted to “v”, a change typical of many south-western English dialects.
Stephen’s Castle, an Iron Age barrow, sits to the north of the town. It is a scheduled monument, and it lies within a site of special scientific interest. Stephen’s Stone, an ancient sandstone block, lies in woodland about 400 metres to the north-east. Similarly, both are reminders that people lived here long before the modern town.
The Hub opened in April 2007 and gives the town a modern civic focus. It houses the 300-seat Merryfield Theatre and a 100-seat hall. Meanwhile, Verwood once had its own railway station, although it closed in 1964.

Much of Verwood’s housing reflects its growth since the late 1980s. Homes built in that period generally have cavity walls, which usually makes a split-system fit straightforward.
