Chickerell, beside Chesil Beach
Chickerell is a town and parish in south Dorset, about 2 miles north-west of Weymouth. Its built-up area had 3,970 residents at the 2021 census. It includes the Charlestown neighbourhood and the hamlet of Buckland Ripers.
The Fleet lagoon lies to the west of the parish, and Chesil Beach runs alongside it. That stretch of coast forms part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, the Isle of Portland lies to the south and Weymouth to the east.
One of Dorset’s newest towns
Roman remains show that people settled here long ago. Even so, Chickerell counts as one of Dorset’s newest towns. Its population rose by 43% between 1961 and 1971, from 2,300 to 3,300.
The Office for National Statistics now counts Chickerell as part of the Weymouth built-up area. Consequently, official figures treat the town and its larger neighbour as one urban area. The B3157 Chickerell Road links the town east to Weymouth and west to Bridport.
Two industrial estates sit in the town, Granby and Lynch Lane. Additionally, Bennetts Water Gardens lies next to Chickerell Downs, a Woodland Trust wood. The Chickerell Rifle Range stands close to the Fleet.
The town also has a role in local energy supply. A 45 MW gas power station and a small solar farm stand at the Chickerell Substation. In addition, a 2.4 GWh grid battery there has approval for 2028, so the site is set to grow.

For national elections, Chickerell sits in the South Dorset constituency. Historically, it formed part of West Dorset district from 1974 to 2019. Before that, it belonged to Weymouth Rural District and then Dorchester Rural District.
