A tied island off the Dorset coast

The Isle of Portland is a tied island in the English Channel, about four miles long and under two miles wide. Chesil Beach joins it to the mainland. Its southern tip, Portland Bill, is the southernmost point of Dorset.

Since 2019, Portland has been part of the Dorset unitary authority, run by Dorset Council. Portland Town Council is based in Fortuneswell, one of the two largest settlements along with Easton. The island forms a central part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. As a result, its geology draws visitors as well as quarry workers.

Portland stone is still quarried here. For example, St Paul’s Cathedral and the eastern front of Buckingham Palace both feature it. Tout Quarry, a disused working on Tophill, has been a sculpture park since 1983. Its collection of carvings is worked in Portland stone.

Harbour, forts and a single road

Portland Harbour was built with stone breakwaters between 1848 and 1905. It served as a Royal Navy base until the naval base closed in 1995. Meanwhile, the Verne Citadel was built between 1857 and 1881 to defend that harbour. Part of it has housed HMP The Verne since 1949.

The harbour is now a civilian port and recreation area. In particular, the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy hosted sailing events at the 2012 Olympic Games. The A354 is the only land route onto the island. It runs along the causeway behind Chesil Beach, and extreme floods cut that road about once a decade.

Many of Portland’s older buildings are built of Portland stone. Several parts of the island are Conservation Areas, protecting settlements that date back hundreds of years. In 2011 there were about 6,300 dwellings on the island.

What an installation here tends to involve

The sea lies on every side of Portland, so an outdoor unit needs a sheltered spot. Salt-laden wind can shorten a unit’s working life if it sits fully exposed. Therefore, an installer will usually check each wall against the prevailing weather first.

A coastal position often calls for a corrosion-resistant casing on the outdoor unit. Solid stone walls are also common in older properties. Consequently, the installer may need more time to drill and route the pipe run between the two units.

Refrigerant work must be done by an F-Gas certified engineer under UK law. It is worth asking to see that certificate before work begins. Similarly, a listed building or a Conservation Area home may face extra planning checks for a front-wall unit.
