Blandford Forum on the Stour

Blandford Forum is a market town in Dorset, on the River Stour. Its built-up area had 11,800 residents at the 2021 census. The town sits between Cranborne Chase and the Dorset Downs, mostly on rising ground north-east of the river.

On 4 June 1731, a great fire destroyed almost all of the town’s buildings. The rebuild that followed used designs by local architects John and William Bastard. As a result, most buildings in the centre are Georgian, and little has changed since.

Blandford has been a fording point on the Stour since Anglo-Saxon times. By the 13th century, it had become a market town serving the dairy farms of the Blackmore Vale. A six-arch stone bridge still spans the river to the south of the town.
