West Moors on the edge of the conurbation
West Moors is a village in Dorset, on the northern fringe of the Poole and Bournemouth conurbation. It lies just outside the larger towns of Ferndown and Verwood. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had 10,425 residents. The parish council was renamed West Moors Town Council in 2020.
Dorset Council is the unitary authority here, following the 2019 changes to local government in England. For those elections, West Moors forms part of the West Moors and Three Legged Cross ward. That ward elects two members to Dorset Council.
The village rose to local importance when railway lines were built through it in the late 19th century. Its station was served by a branch line until 4 May 1964. Today, the Castleman Trailway footpath follows the old trackbed towards Ringwood and Poole. The original level crossing keeper’s cottage still stands on Station Road.
West Moors also expanded around a military fuel depot inside the parish. However, in 2018 the forces announced a move away, and most of the former military housing has been sold off. More recent growth, meanwhile, has come from people who commute to Bournemouth, Poole and Southampton.
