Colehill, between Wimborne and Ferndown
Colehill is a town and civil parish in south-east Dorset. It lies between Wimborne Minster to the west and Ferndown to the east.
Dorset Council has run the area since 2019, when Dorset became a unitary authority. Before that, Colehill sat in East Dorset district from 1974. In December 2025, the parish council voted to rename itself Colehill Town Council.
A village that grew in the 20th century
People lived here long before the houses came. Six round barrows, which can still be seen, point to settlement as early as 2000 BC. The name itself first appears in 1431, spelt Colhulle.
However, Colehill stayed small for most of its history. A few houses date from the 1860s, yet the big change came much later. The population rose from 1,786 in 1951 to 5,370 in 1971.
As a result, much of Colehill is made up of large estates of modern family homes. There is also a good deal of infill building between older plots. More homes are planned too, since a 2013 district plan placed 980 new homes here.
Green space still runs through the parish, in contrast to a busy town centre. Triangle Woods, near the war memorial, has village green status. Leigh Common is a Local Nature Reserve, and the Forestry England plantation at Cannon Hill is popular for walks.
The parish church, St Michael and All Angels, dates from 1893. The architect Caröe designed it in the Arts and Crafts style, half in brick and half in timber. Meanwhile, parts of the parish fall within the South West Hampshire and South East Dorset Green Belt.
