Camborne and the old mining district
Camborne is a town and civil parish in Cornwall. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had 20,450 people. The town lies about 2 miles inland, although the parish reaches the north coast at Hell’s Mouth and Deadman’s Cove. Camborne Town Council and Cornwall Council share local government here.
Camborne was just a village until the mining boom of the late 18th century. After that, the Camborne and Redruth district grew into one of the richest tin and copper areas anywhere. Dolcoath Mine was for many years the deepest mine in the world. Meanwhile, South Crofty, the last working tin mine in Europe, closed in 1998.
Today, the Camborne and Redruth Mining District forms part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. The Camborne School of Mines also began here, before it moved to the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus in 2004.
One long built-up corridor
Camborne forms the western end of a loose built-up area that stretches to Redruth, 3 miles east. Along the old road between them lie Roskear, Tuckingmill, Pool and Illogan Highway. The A30 now bypasses both towns to the north.
The area sits on the northern side of the Carn Brea granite upland, which slopes north towards the sea. Several small streams cut narrow valleys through it, deepened by centuries of tin streaming. Because of that, some streets rise and fall more than a quick map suggests.

Camborne has a mild, oceanic climate, with only about 7.4 frosts a year on average. Even so, the town recorded 30.4°C twice in the summer of 2022. Therefore, cooling can earn its keep on the warmest days, even this far west. Rain is frequent all year, so a sheltered spot for the outdoor unit is worth asking about.
