Air conditioning installation in Fowey
Fowey is a port town and civil parish in south Cornwall. Its built-up area had 2,030 residents at the 2021 census. It sits at the mouth of the River Fowey, where the estuary forms a natural harbour.
Melt water after the last ice age raised the sea and flooded a large valley here. As a result, the harbour is navigable for its last seven miles. The local church was first set up some time in the 7th century, well before the Norman invasion.
Fowey later became an important trading port. During the Hundred Years’ War, a group of privateers called the Fowey Gallants had licence to seize enemy ships. A small castle also went up on St Catherine’s Point around 1540, and its ruins still stand.
In 1869, a railway opened to new jetties above Carne Point. A second line from Par followed in 1873, and Fowey became the centre for china clay exports. The Lostwithiel branch still carries china clay to those jetties today.
Writers have long been drawn here too. For example, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch settled in Fowey in 1891 and stayed for the rest of his life. Daphne du Maurier also lived in the town. The Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature now runs each May, the month of her birth.
Streets, buildings and units across Fowey
The medieval town ran along the river and a little way up the hillside. Merchants’ houses once backed straight onto the waterfront. Meanwhile, the parish church of St Fimbarrus is grade I listed and dates from the early 14th century.
Because so much of central Fowey sits on a hillside by the water, an installer needs to plan pipe runs with care. A flat or small courtyard may leave little space for an outdoor unit.
