The place

Hayle is a port town in west Cornwall, about seven miles north-east of Penzance in a straight line. It sits at the mouth of the River Hayle, which runs out into St Ives Bay. At the 2021 census its built-up area had 9,040 residents. Hayle Town Council and Cornwall Council share local government here.

The town began as three separate settlements: Foundry, Copperhouse and the Towans. Over time they merged into one place. Meanwhile, the name Towans still describes the sand dunes behind its three miles of beaches. Those dunes now hold many of the town’s holiday villages and camping sites.

In the 19th century, Hayle was an important mining port and a major centre for steam engines. John Harvey set up a foundry here in 1779. His firm, Harvey & Co, later built beam engines that it sold around the world. The Cornish Copper Company also ran a copper smelter at Copperhouse.

The smelter’s waste slag became dark, heavy building blocks. You can still see these blocks in many of the town’s buildings. Hayle’s historic harbour also forms part of a World Heritage Site. That site, the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape, joined the list in 2006.

As a result, new building near the quays has to suit that setting. For example, the Asda store that opened on South Quay in 2014 had a design chosen to fit it. Hayle railway station sits by Foundry Square, with Great Western Railway and CrossCountry services.
