Liskeard, a stannary and market town

Liskeard is an ancient stannary and market town in south-east Cornwall. It lies about 14 miles west of the Devon border and 12 miles east of Bodmin. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had 10,900 residents.

The market charter dates from 1240, and farming has mattered to the town ever since. Later, the tin mining boom brought a period of wealth. In particular, Liskeard became a key centre for the industry, as a place for a stannary and for coinage.

Buildings in the town centre

Several civic buildings survive from the busier years. Liskeard Guildhall, with its prominent clock tower, dates from 1859. The Public Hall on West Street followed in 1890, and the town council now meets there.

St Martin’s is the second largest parish church in Cornwall. Nearby, Charles I lodged at Stuart House on the Parade in 1644. It is now a community building for arts and heritage events.

Rail and road links

Liskeard station sits on the Cornish Main Line between London Paddington and Penzance. It is also where the Looe Valley Line begins. Trains for Looe leave from a platform set at right angles to the main line, then drop steeply down to Coombe Junction.

The A38 once ran through the town centre. However, a dual carriageway bypass now carries that traffic to the south. As a result, the centre is still easy to reach but has little through traffic.
