St Ives, a harbour town known for its artists
St Ives is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall. It lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne, on the coast of the Celtic Sea. Its built-up area had 5,410 residents at the 2021 census. The parish also takes in Carbis Bay, Lelant and the nearby countryside.
The town takes its name from Saint Ia, an Irish saint said to have arrived in the 5th century. The parish church also bears her name. St Ives was once dependent on fishing. However, as fishing declined, it became mainly a popular seaside resort.
The modern resort grew after the St Ives Bay branch line opened in 1877. The railway, which winds along the cliffs and bays, still runs from St Erth today. Meanwhile, John Smeaton rebuilt the harbour pier between 1766 and 1770.
Art, beaches and the harbour
Artists have long been drawn here. For example, James Whistler and Walter Sickert visited in 1884. Later, in 1939, Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo settled in the town.
Today St Ives is home to Tate St Ives. In addition, the Tate has owned the Barbara Hepworth Museum and her sculpture garden since 1980. The Leach Pottery, set up in 1920, is still working and houses a small museum.
The town has four beaches: Porthmeor, Porthgwidden, Harbour and Porthminster. While commercial fishing is much reduced, the harbour is still in use. Boats run day trips to the seal colonies on the Carrack Rocks.
