Callington, in east Cornwall

Callington is a town and civil parish in east Cornwall, between Dartmoor to the east and Bodmin Moor to the west. Its built-up area had 4,665 people at the 2021 census. It lies about 7 miles north of Saltash and 9 miles south of Launceston. Two tiers of local government cover it: Callington Town Council and Cornwall Council.

The town gained a market in 1267, and it grew as an agricultural market town. It sits where the A388 from Saltash to Launceston crosses the A390 from Tavistock to Liskeard. The parish also takes in the hamlets of Kelly Bray, Bowling Green, Frogwell and Downgate. As a result, a Callington address can mean a town-centre street or a small outlying settlement.

Kit Hill and the mining past

Kit Hill rises to 333 metres, about a mile north-east of the town. In the 19th century, the Callington area ranked among the most important mining districts in Great Britain. Miners even found silver nearby, in Silver Valley. Today the landscape still shows mining remains, although no mines are active.

Granite is still quarried on Hingston Down, close to the town. Meanwhile, St Mary’s Church dates from 1438, and the Old Clink on Tillie Street was built in 1851 as a lock-up. Both are reminders that parts of Callington are much older than its newer estates.
