Plymouth is a port city and unitary authority in Devon. It sits on the county’s south coast, between the rivers Plym and Tamar. Its built-up area had 266,955 residents at the 2021 census. That makes it the second-largest city in the South West, after Bristol.

The city centre looks the way it does largely because of the Second World War. The Plymouth Blitz destroyed much of the centre and over 3,700 houses. Afterwards, Sir Patrick Abercrombie’s Plan for Plymouth set out wide, parallel boulevards to replace the old streets.

Housing was rebuilt at speed after the war. Over 1,000 permanent council houses went up each year from 1951 to 1957. By 1964, more than 20,000 new homes had been built across the city.

Older districts and newer suburbs

Further out, the picture changes. Stoke, also called Stoke Damerel, is an inner suburb that is now densely built up with family houses. It also has private houses from Georgian and Victorian times. Devonport, next door, began around 1700 as a settlement for workers at the new naval dockyard.

The Barbican is different again. It sits on the western and northern sides of Sutton Harbour, and it escaped most of the Blitz damage. As a result, it has the largest concentration of cobbled streets in Britain and 100 listed buildings.

Efford, by contrast, is a large, mostly post-war suburb in the east of the city. It consists mainly of council and housing association homes. Meanwhile, Plympton and Plymstock have been part of the city since 1967.
