Teignmouth is a seaside town, fishing port and civil parish in Devon. It lies on the north bank of the estuary mouth of the River Teign. Its built-up area had a population of 15,315 at the 2021 census. It grew from a fishing port tied to the Newfoundland cod trade into a fashionable resort in Georgian times.

By 1803 writers called Teignmouth a “fashionable watering place”. Den Crescent and its Assembly Rooms, laid out in 1826, still survive largely unchanged. Furthermore, the South Devon Railway opened in 1846 and brought further growth. The poet John Keats spent several weeks here in spring 1818, completing his poem Endymion.

The port has existed since the 13th century and remains active today. For instance, it handles mostly clay, timber and grain. Teignmouth Lighthouse went up in 1845 to guide ships into the harbour.

The seafront has a sea beach, Teignmouth Pier and the Den, a grassy open space that was once a large sand dune. Across the water, the red sandstone headland called the Ness is the town’s best-known sight from the sea. In particular, the estuary looks large for its river because it is a drowned valley.

That two-sided setting matters most here. The town faces open sea on one side and the estuary on the other. A home near the seafront faces salty air head-on.

Teignmouth has a town centre conservation area, listed by Teignbridge District Council. It contains dozens of listed buildings. Consequently, a visible outside change there may need planning advice first. Check with the council whether your building falls inside it.

The main railway line runs along the South Devon Railway sea wall between Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren. Isambard Kingdom Brunel built the line. Although it has no bearing on a fit, it shows how narrow the strip between railway and sea can be.

A road bridge links Teignmouth to Shaldon across the estuary. The first bridge opened in 1827, and the present one was rebuilt between 1928 and 1931. Meanwhile, a passenger ferry also crosses at the river mouth.
