Somerset’s county town on the River Tone

Taunton is the county town of Somerset and a market town with a minster church. Its name comes from “Town on the River Tone”. The town’s history runs back more than a thousand years, to a 10th-century monastic site. The Normans later rebuilt that site as Taunton Castle in the 12th century.

The town sits in the Vale of Taunton, between the Quantock, Blackdown and Brendon hills. Meanwhile, junctions 25 and 26 of the M5 sit close to the town, alongside the A38 and A358. The Grand Western Canal reached Taunton in 1839, and the Bristol and Exeter Railway followed in 1842.
