Bodmin, south-west of the moor
Bodmin is a Cornish town of about 16,900 people, according to the 2021 census. It lies south-west of Bodmin Moor. The town became the county town of Cornwall in 1838, when the main county courts moved here from Launceston. However, Truro slowly took over those roles, and the last courts left Shire Hall in 1988.
Two councils cover the town today. Bodmin Town Council meets at the Shire House on Mount Folly. Cornwall Council is the unitary authority above it, so planning decisions rest with that one body.
St Petroc founded a monastery here in the 6th century. The parish church that carries his name was largely rebuilt in the 15th century. It is the largest church in Cornwall after Truro Cathedral. Bodmin Jail, built in the late 18th century, still stands nearby as a semi-ruin.
The town also has a hill of its own. Bodmin Beacon rises to 162 metres, and a tall granite monument stands at its summit. Since the land around it is now a local nature reserve, it stays open to walkers.
