Looe, either side of the river
Looe is a coastal town and civil parish in south-east Cornwall. It lies 7 miles south of Liskeard. At the 2021 census, its built-up area had 5,310 residents.
Looe grew as two separate towns, East Looe and West Looe, on opposite banks of the River Looe. A bridge linked them from the 15th century. However, they stayed separate boroughs until they were united in 1898. Anyone budgeting for a system here can check our 2026 installation cost guide first.
The town centres on a small harbour. From there, it stretches along the steep-sided valley of the river, which reaches the sea beside a sandy beach. Looe Town Council and Cornwall Council share local government.
The bridge, the pier and the island
The current bridge has seven arches. It opened in 1853, when Looe was one of Cornwall’s largest ports. At that time, the harbour exported tin, arsenic and granite.
East Looe centres on its broad sandy beach and the Banjo Pier, designed by Joseph Thomas. Behind the church, a grid of narrow streets forms the main shopping area. In addition, many modern houses stand on the high ground north of both halves of the town. Owners near the older streets should check when a unit needs planning permission before fitting one.
To the west, past the stony Hannafore Beach, lies Looe Island. Small fishing boats still bring their catch back to port each day. Looe is also home to the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain, although tourism is now its main business.
The railway to Liskeard
The Looe Valley Line runs for about 8.75 miles from Liskeard to Looe. It follows the valley of the East Looe River for much of the way. Passenger trains began in 1879, just as the Victorian fashion for seaside holidays was turning Looe into a tourist town.

Because salt in sea air speeds up corrosion, an installer will usually look for a sheltered wall. A unit facing the harbour or the beach has a harder life. Homes near Hannafore and the harbour mouth are the most exposed.
The narrow streets behind East Looe’s beach leave little room to work. As a result, access and pipe runs need planning before the fitting day. In contrast, the newer houses on the high ground often have more outside space.
Because the valley sides are steep, parking and access can be tight in places. Mention this when you get in touch, along with roughly where your home sits. Any refrigerant work must be done by an F-gas certified engineer, so ask to see that certificate first.
Coverage from Plymouth
