Falmouth: a port town on the River Fal
Falmouth is a town, civil parish and port on the River Fal, on the south coast of Cornwall. The 2021 census counted 24,070 people in its built-up area. Falmouth Town Council and Cornwall Council share local government here.
The Killigrew family founded the town in 1613, near the existing Pendennis Castle. Henry VIII had built that castle in 1540 to defend Carrick Roads. Falmouth then grew as a port and overshadowed the earlier town of Penryn. Later, the railway arrived in 1863, and tourism became important too.
Falmouth is famous for its harbour. Together with Carrick Roads, it forms the deepest natural harbour in Western Europe. It is also the largest port in Cornwall, and cruise ships often call there.
A town shaped by the sea
For over 160 years, from 1689 to 1851, the Falmouth Packet Service carried mail from here to Britain’s growing empire. The docks followed from 1858. Today they still handle cargo and refuel visiting ships, so the port remains a working one.
The port has seen famous arrivals too. For example, HMS Beagle anchored here in October 1836, at the end of her voyage around the world. Charles Darwin left the ship at Falmouth and took the mail coach home.
The National Maritime Museum Cornwall opened on the waterfront in 2003. Falmouth University also has a campus in the town, at Woodlane. In addition, the town is home to Falmouth Art Gallery, and it won a Great British High Street award in 2016.
Five main beaches run from Pendennis Castle towards the Helford river. These are Castle, Tunnel, Gyllyngvase, Swanpool and Maenporth. As a result, Falmouth is now primarily a tourist resort as well as a port.

Homes near the harbour and beaches face salt-laden air. This can be harder on unprotected metal fittings over time. Therefore, siting an outdoor unit away from direct sea spray is worth raising with the installer.
Converted period buildings and flats can raise questions about shared walls or leasehold consent. Getting around Falmouth
Falmouth has three railway stations: Falmouth Docks, Falmouth Town and Penmere. All three sit on the Maritime Line, a branch line from Truro. Meanwhile, ferries cross to St Mawes, Flushing and Trelissick, and upriver to Truro.
