Redruth and its mining past
Redruth is a town and civil parish in Cornwall. The 2021 census counted 15,455 people in its built-up area. Local government has two tiers: Redruth Town Council and Cornwall Council, the unitary authority. The name comes from the Cornish for “red ford”.
Shallow lodes of tin and copper made the site good for mining. Then, in the 18th century, demand for copper ore boomed, because it was needed to make brass. Redruth quickly became one of the largest and richest mining areas in Britain. However, by the end of the 19th century the industry was in decline, and many miners emigrated.
Part of a World Heritage Site
The Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape joined the World Heritage List in July 2006. One of its areas is the Camborne and Redruth Mining District. In the early 19th century, the region produced two-thirds of the world’s supply of copper. Cornwall’s last working mine, South Crofty at Pool between Redruth and Camborne, closed in March 1998.
Redruth forms the eastern part of a loose conurbation that stretches to Camborne, about 3 miles west. At the 2011 census, the ONS treated the two as one built-up area. Since 2021, however, Redruth has been counted as a separate built-up area.
Landmarks in the town
Murdoch House on Cross Street dates from the 1660s. William Murdoch lived there from 1782 to 1798 and lit it with coal gas. It was the first house in the world with this type of lighting. The Mining Exchange was built in 1880 for trading mineral stock, and the Passmore Edwards Free Library followed in the 1890s.
Kresen Kernow, on the site of the old Redruth Brewery, holds Cornwall’s archives. Meanwhile, a bronze statue of a tin miner by David Annand has stood in the town since 2008. The parish church of St Uny, rebuilt in 1756 in granite, is Grade II* listed.
