The place

Helston is a town and civil parish in Cornwall, at the northern end of the Lizard Peninsula. It is the most southerly town on the island of Great Britain. At the 2021 census its built-up area had 11,360 residents. Helston Town Council and Cornwall Council share local government, and the town council is based at the Guildhall in Market Place.

King John granted Helston its charter in 1201. It was also a stannary town, where officials weighed tin ingots to set the duty owed to the Duke of Cornwall. Later it became a cattle market town too. Today it is best known for Flora Day, held each year on 8 May, when the Furry Dance winds through the streets.

The River Cober runs through Helston on its way to Loe Pool, Cornwall’s largest natural lake. A shingle bar, Loe Bar, blocks the mouth of the river. Meanwhile, the National Trust’s Penrose Amenity Area offers riverside walks down to the pool. Coronation Park, below the town, has a boating lake at its centre.

Helston has an oceanic climate and is one of the mildest places in the country. Frosts are rarely severe, and the nearest Met Office station is at RNAS Culdrose, about a mile south-east of the centre. Still, the area reached 30.6°C in June 1976.
