Clevedon and its seafront
Clevedon is a seaside town and civil parish in North Somerset. It lies along the Severn Estuary, and its built-up area had 21,085 residents at the 2021 census. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. However, it grew mainly in the Victorian period, as a seaside resort.
Before that, Clevedon was a farming village. The Victorian craze for sea bathing changed it into a popular seaside town. For example, saltwater baths once stood next to the pier, and bathing machines lined the main beach.
The pier and the Marine Lake
Clevedon Pier opened in 1869. It is one of the earliest surviving examples of a Victorian pier. Two outer spans collapsed in 1970, but the pier was restored and reopened in 1989. In 2001, it became a Grade I listed building.
Along the front, the Marine Lake is a tidal pool refreshed with salt water on spring tides. It is popular with open water swimmers. The seafront runs about half a mile from the pier to Salthouse Field, with gardens and a Victorian bandstand.
Hills, cliffs and Poets’ Walk
In particular, the town sits on and around seven small hills. These include Church Hill, Dial Hill and Wain’s Hill, which carries the remains of an Iron Age hill fort. On a clear day, there are views across the estuary to Wales.
Poets’ Walk is a footpath round Wain’s Hill and Church Hill, south-west of the seafront. Its name recalls poets who visited the town, including Coleridge in 1795 and Tennyson in 1834. Meanwhile, the shore itself mixes pebble beaches with low rocky cliffs.

Near the seafront, salt in the air is the main factor for an outdoor unit. Because salt speeds up rust on bare metal, a sheltered spot usually works better than a wall facing the estuary. Since the town is built across several hills, some homes also sit on sloping plots. That can change where a unit fits best.
Further back from the front, the steps are the same as anywhere else. The installer checks the wiring, plans the pipe run and sizes the system for the rooms. UK rules require anyone who installs air conditioning to hold an F-gas certificate, so it is fair to ask to see it.

Getting there from Bristol
Clevedon lies about 15.1 miles by road from Bristol, around 30 minutes’ drive. In a straight line, the gap is about 11.5 miles. Its industrial estates sit near the M5 motorway junction, and the nearest railway station is at Yatton. The town is also a dormitory town for Bristol.
Historically, Clevedon was part of Somerset, and between 1974 and 1996 it was part of the county of Avon. It now falls within the North Somerset unitary authority.
